Custom Fielding Sequence
Custom Fielding Sequence
For outs that don't match the Common Plays buttons (for example double plays, triple plays, or unusual assist/putout sequences), you can enter a custom fielding sequence in the Custom Sequence area of the panel.
This fielding sequence uses the Retrosheet event file coding format where position numbers are used for assists and putouts and numbers inside parentheses are used to specify which runner is out for multiple outs on one play. Conceptually, fielding sequences can be thought of as following the path of the ball through the fielders who touch it, marking the outs that occur along the way.
Basic rules
- The sequence must start with a position number 1–9.
- The sequence must end with a position number 1–9 OR a runner notation (B), (1), (2), (3).
- Runner notations represent the base on which the runner started the play.
- A sequence of numbers indicate assists with the terminating number being the fielder who makes the out.
- The sequence can optionally be followed by a runner notation to indicate which runner is out if there could be ambiguity.
- Unless otherwise noted, the terminating out is at the base that the fielder who made the final out would normally cover.
Examples
64(1)3- Standard 6-4-3 double play, runner on first base (1) is out at second and the batter is out at first.
3(B)3(1)- Line out to first base to get the batter (B) out then the runner who started on first (1) is tagged/forced out for the double play.
7(B)72(3)- Fly out to left field to get the batter (B) out then the runner who started on third base (3) is thrown out at home plate (assumed due to the fielder, 2, making the second putout).
143- Ball hits the pitcher and is fielded by the second baseman who throws to first base for the force out. (Batter is assumed to be the target of the out if no runner notation is present)
