Scorecard Notation

Reading play-by-play symbols and colors on the in-replay scorecard.

The scorecard shows a notation for each play in the current half-inning. The notation is a combination of the play result, the baserunner(s) who advanced, and the fielder(s) who were involved in the play.

  • Each scorecard cell is numbered sequentially (top left) for each team, making it easy to uniquely identify each plate appearance.
  • Blue lines indicate hits, green lines are walks or advancement on error, red lines are out on advance, and dark grey lines are advancement during the plate appearance of another player.
  • When a runner advances due to the actions of another player, the batting order number of that player is shown beside the advancement line. Multiple base advancements will only show the batting order number next to the final base advancement. Parentheses are used to differentiate between the play result and the batting order number.
  • Red dot(s) indicate the player was put out during their plate appearance or time on base. The number of dots indicates the out of the inning that the player is responsible for (i.e. two dots means the second out of the inning was made by that player).
  • Solid blue dot(s) are RBI awarded to the player. An empty blue dot indicates a run scored during their plate appearance but no RBI was awarded.
  • A thick line to the left of the scorecard cell indicates that the player was an offensive substitution for this plate appearance. A thick line on top indicates a pitcher substitution immediately before the plate appearance.
  • Cell background colors indicate the opposing pitcher. The color has no significance except to visually distinguish between pitchers.
  • The numbers in parentheses after substitutions indicate the scorecard cell number during which the player was substituted into the game. Defensive substitutions reference a scorecard cell on the opposing team's scorecard and offensive substitutions reference a scorecard cell on the same team's scorecard. The numbers are also color-coded to match the target team's color.
